Taking a long journey? Make sure you have checked your vehicle first

If you are planning to go away during the summer holidays and are thinking about driving to the destination yourself, it’s important that you take the time to check that your vehicle is fit for the job. It is the responsibility of the driver to check they are happy with the vehicle before driving, and many road accidents and breakdowns could be avoided if you inspect the vehicle first.

Here are a few of the top things to check before a long journey:

Tyres- Make sure they have enough tread, and inspect for damage. Check tyre pressures according to your vehicle manual.

Oil- A simple check of the dipstick to make sure the engine oil is within the safe limits. IF not top it up and check again in a couple of days.

Water- Check your water level is between the min and max line, and top up if needed. This check should always be done when the engine is cold.

Lights- Check all lights are fully working, including brake, side, full, head and hazard (indicators) Lights.
